Addressing the individual needs of each patient is of paramount importance to the health professionals and staff at AdventHealth Rehabilitative Services. Conditions That We Can Help Treat
Our therapists treat a wide range of conditions. They routinely assess and address issues associated with speaking, swallowing, cognition, and memory.
The following are some of the conditions we address:
- Swallowing issues, including dysphagia
- Aphasia, the impairment of communication skills most commonly resulting from stroke or brain injury
- Apraxia, dysarthria, and orofacial myofunctional disorders, all of which can inhibit the ability to speak
- Other speaking and communication issues, including stuttering
We carefully review symptoms to determine a diagnosis and the best treatment approach for each patient.
Speech Therapy Techniques
Our speech therapy team employs many different techniques to address conditions and improve our patients’ quality of life, including oral motor strengthening, cognitive retraining, electrical stimulation, and manual manipulation. In addition to working toward enhanced speaking ability, we help clients who experience challenges with swallowing foods or liquids. To better determine the root cause of these problems, we conduct a modified barium swallow test. The results help us to make the appropriate treatment recommendations.
Some of our speech therapists are trained to work with patients affected by Parkinson’s disease. They use the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) LOUD therapy techniques to improve voice quality and vocal loudness.
